A cold-call script that books meetings is not a paragraph you read out. It is four parts doing four jobs — an interruption you name, a reason this number was dialled, a hypothesis about the person's world, and one small ask — and each part fails in its own way, so each is diagnosed separately. Most script advice treats the whole thing as tone. It is structure. Get the four parts right and the wording matters much less than anyone selling you a template would like.

What a cold-call script actually has to do in the first ten seconds

The person answering did not plan this conversation. Whatever they were doing, they stopped doing it, and they are now running a fast classification: is this a person I know, a person I need, or a person I can end. Your script's only job in the first ten seconds is to move you out of the third bucket. Nothing about your product does that. Only two things do — evidence that you dialled this number deliberately, and evidence that you will be brief.

That is why "How are you today?" fails. Not because it is insincere, but because it supplies neither. It costs three seconds and returns no information, and the person has already spent those three seconds deciding.

It is also why the strongest single sentence in cold calling is an admission: you know you are interrupting. Naming the interruption does something a smooth opener cannot. It tells the listener you are aware of the imposition, which is the first evidence you are not a machine reading a list.

The four parts, and the different way each one fails

Write your script as four labelled blocks rather than a paragraph, because when the call goes wrong you need to know which block broke.

  • The interruption. One sentence acknowledging that this call is unexpected, plus a bounded ask for time. Fails as a hang-up in the first five seconds.
  • The reason. One sentence naming why this company, this role, this week. Fails as "what is this regarding?" delivered flatly — a question that means your reason did not land as a reason.
  • The hypothesis. One or two sentences describing a problem you believe they have, stated as a guess rather than a fact. Fails as polite disagreement, or as silence.
  • The ask. One sentence proposing a small, specific next step. Fails as "send me some information", which is a deferral dressed as interest.

Four blocks, four distinct failure signatures. If you are getting hang-ups at second four, no amount of work on the ask will help. If you are getting to the ask and collecting "send me an email", your hypothesis landed and your ask is too big.

That mapping is the reason to script at all. A rep improvising has no way to know which of the four they are losing, because they are not saying the same four things twice.

The three openers, and the decision rule for choosing between them

There are three openers that survive contact with real phone calls. They differ in what they spend the first five seconds on.

The permission opener. "Hi Priya, this is Sam from Autocloz. I know I am calling out of the blue — do you have thirty seconds and I will tell you why, and you can tell me to go away?" It spends the opening on the interruption and buys explicit consent to continue. The cost is real: some people take the exit you handed them. The benefit is that everyone who stays has agreed to listen.

The reason opener. "Hi Priya, this is Sam from Autocloz. I am calling because you posted two SDR roles in Bengaluru last week and I have a specific question about how you are handling the ramp." It spends the opening on the reason and skips the permission ask. It works best when the reason is genuinely specific and genuinely recent, and it collapses badly when the reason is a merge field.

The pattern-interrupt. "Hi Priya — Sam here. This is a cold call. Do you want to hang up?" It spends the opening on candour. It is memorable, it is polarising, and it burns out on any list you will call twice.

The decision rule is about calendar density, not personality. If your buyer's day is scheduled in fifteen-minute blocks by somebody else, use the permission opener, because the scarce resource is their attention and asking for it respectfully is the differentiator. If your buyer is at a desk doing the operational work you are calling about, use the reason opener, because they will engage with a specific operational question faster than they will engage with a request for time.

The one thing all three share: a first name, your first name, and your company, in that order, in the first eight words. Anonymity reads as a robocall.

Objection handles as a decision tree, not a list of comebacks

A list of comebacks makes reps memorise responses. A decision tree makes them classify first, which is the part that actually matters, because two objections that sound identical need opposite responses.

"I am busy." Classify: is this a real time constraint or a soft refusal? The test is whether they name a time. Offer one binary choice — "completely fair, do you want two minutes now or ten on Thursday?" — and their answer classifies it for you. If they pick, it was a time constraint. If they deflect again, it was a refusal, and you move to the exit.

"Send me an email." This is almost always a deferral, and the single most useful reply is a question rather than a promise: "Happy to. So I do not send you something useless — what would it need to answer for it to be worth your five minutes?" Either they tell you, and you now have a discovery answer from a cold call, or they cannot, which tells you there is nothing there. Do not argue with the deferral. Use it.

"We already have something for this." Do not attack the incumbent. Ask what it does not do: "Good, most teams your size do. What is the part of it your team works around?" A workaround is a real answer; "nothing" is a real answer too, and it disqualifies fast, which is worth as much.

"We are not interested." The classification here is whether they know what you do. If it arrived before your hypothesis, they are refusing the call, not the offer, and the only legitimate move is a graceful exit plus one question about who else. If it arrived after your hypothesis, they are refusing the offer, and the right response is to ask which part was wrong — because if your hypothesis is wrong for this segment, that is a list problem you want to hear about.

"How did you get my number?" Answer plainly and immediately. Name the source. Any evasion here converts a mild irritation into a complaint, and on a call there is no unsubscribe link to absorb it.

The exit line matters more than any handle. "Understood — I will take you off the list. Before I go, is there someone who owns this that I should have called instead?" It costs four seconds, it honours the refusal, and it is the single highest-yield question in the whole script.

Why you cannot A/B test an opener the way you test a subject line

This is the part almost every cold-calling guide gets wrong, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion.

Comparing two openers means comparing two proportions. The standard normal-approximation sample size for that comparison, at 80 percent power and a 5 percent two-sided significance level, is roughly n = 7.84 × [p₁(1−p₁) + p₂(1−p₂)] / (p₂−p₁)² per arm.

Put a realistic cold-calling test through it. Suppose opener A books a meeting on 4 percent of connected conversations and opener B books on 6 percent — a 50 percent relative improvement, which would be an enormous win. Then p₁(1−p₁) = 0.0384, p₂(1−p₂) = 0.0564, the sum is 0.0948, and the squared difference is 0.0004. That gives 7.84 × 0.0948 / 0.0004 ≈ 1,858 connected conversations per arm.

Connected conversations, not dials. At a 5 percent connect rate you need about 37,000 dials per arm, so roughly 74,000 dials to resolve one opener test.

Now run the same formula on an email subject line moving open rate from 30 percent to 34 percent: 0.21 + 0.2244 = 0.4344, squared difference 0.0016, so 7.84 × 0.4344 / 0.0016 ≈ 2,129 sends per arm. Two thousand emails, which any team sends in a week.

The gap is not because calling is harder to measure. It is because low base rates and small absolute differences both blow up the denominator, and calling has both. The practical consequence is that you should stop trying to prove an opener statistically and instead do three things: pick the opener by the decision rule above, standardise it so every rep says the same four blocks, and put your measurement effort on the parts of the call that happen often enough to measure — connect rate by time slot, connect rate by number type, and the distribution of which of the four blocks the call died in. Those events happen on every dial, so they resolve in days rather than quarters.

Dispositions: the vocabulary that makes a script measurable at all

A script you cannot compare across weeks is a script you cannot improve. Comparison requires that every attempt lands in one bucket from a fixed list, and that the list does not change when a rep is in a hurry.

The constraint is enforced in the database, which means a disposition outside the list cannot be written at all.

Build your script metrics on top of that, not beside it. Three ratios do most of the work:

  • Connect rate = answered divided by attempts, sliced by hour and by whether the number is a mobile or a desk line.
  • Block-one survival = conversations that got past the interruption divided by answered. This is the number your opener moves.
  • Ask conversion = meetings booked divided by conversations that reached the ask. This is the number your ask moves.

Keeping them separate is the entire point. A team that only tracks meetings per dial cannot tell a caller-ID problem from a bad opener from an ask that is too big, and will spend a quarter rewriting the wrong sentence.

What has to be true before the script is ever spoken

A script is the last thing that goes wrong on a calling programme. Four things go wrong first, and all four are measurable before you write a word.

The number has to be right and the right kind. A stale direct line is a paid dial with no chance of connecting. A switchboard number and a mobile number produce different connect rates and need different scripts, so store the type rather than treating a phone column as one thing.

The window has to be legal where they are. The Federal Communications Commission rule at 47 CFR 64.1200(c)(1) prohibits a telephone solicitation to a residential subscriber "before the hour of 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. (local time at the called party's location)". Note whose clock that is. Autocloz's quiet-hours check resolves a campaign-level override first, then the workspace default for the channel, then the sending account's own window — and the time zone it evaluates in comes from the override or from the account, defaulting to UTC. It is never derived from the recipient. If your list spans time zones, you need a sender per zone with its own window, or you are relying on a clock that has nothing to do with where the phone is ringing. The number you show has to survive the carrier's labelling. Caller-ID authentication is performed by carriers in the call path and the attestation level is assigned by your originating provider, not chosen by you. You can influence it by using numbers your provider can fully attest, and you can lose it by rotating through numbers you do not own.

Most attempts will reach a mailbox. That is not a failure of the script, it is the base case, and it needs its own artefact rather than an improvised message — the voicemail scripts cover what a message can and structurally cannot do.

Recording the attempt so the second call is not the first call again

The second dial to the same person is worth more than the first, and most teams throw that away by recording nothing but a disposition.

Write three things to the lead after every conversation that got past block one: the hypothesis you used, the objection class you hit, and any fact they volunteered. That matters because a partial write used to clear the whole map, and a qualification note that silently erases the last rep's note is worse than no note.

One trap worth knowing before you build a tagging convention on top of this: a tag is stored exactly as typed, but the ?tag= filter lower-cases the value before matching, and the match is case-sensitive JSONB containment. A tag saved as "Gatekeeper" is therefore unreachable by that filter. Pick lower-case tags and enforce it in your process, because nothing in the product enforces it for you.

What a script cannot fix, and what Autocloz does not check before a dial

A script is a small lever on a big machine, and here is where its leverage runs out.

A script cannot fix a list. If the hypothesis in block three is wrong for most of the people you are dialling, no phrasing rescues it. Persistent polite disagreement at block three is a targeting signal, not a copy signal.

A script cannot fix a number that does not ring. Connect rate is set by data accuracy, number type, time of day and carrier labelling, and every one of those is upstream of the first word.

A script cannot make a call lawful. Whether your call is a telephone solicitation, whether an established business relationship applies, and how a state statute reads on your facts are legal questions with legal answers. Treat the rules described here as published rules and take advice on your own programme.

A do-not-contact entry is keyed to the identifier, not to the person. Suppressing a phone number blocks calls, SMS and WhatsApp to that number, and leaves their email address entirely untouched. If someone tells you on a call to stop contacting them, suppress every identifier you hold for them, because one suppression does not travel across the others by itself.

There is no single best line, but the openers that survive contact share a shape: they name the interruption, they state one specific reason this number was dialled rather than any other, and they ask for a small, bounded amount of time. Which one wins depends on seniority and industry, and you will not be able to prove which one wins from your own volume unless you place tens of thousands of dials, so pick on judgement and test the parts you can measure.
